Tonight I'm resting in Chicago prior to a 6:30am departure to the Yucatan area of Mexico. I will wander for 5 days near Mérida seeing several Maya ruins, then meet Linda in Cancun for 6 days, and return to wandering in the area near Tulum for 5 more days. I'll write more as time permits.

Here in Antigua Guatemala and elsewhere I'm sure church bells ring at unusual times and without a recognizable pattern. Even during my visit last year I thought an electronic system was malfunctioning and repairs were never made.

Sights and sounds from last year are returning to me every moment of my return. Tripping on the rough cobblestone streets, playing "frogger" with the rapid flow of traffic, untimed tolls of church bells reaching random counts before repeating a syncopated rhythm. We left beautiful La Casa del Mundo on a crowded water shuttle that received cold water sprays over the bow. Linda was under a plastic tarp inside the covered boat while I sat forward exposed to the "100 year flood stage" that threatened to swamp the boat. Isn't that gentlemanly of me.

Spent yesterday sleeping that continued through the night. Feeling better this morning and anticipating breakfast. Planning to slow down a bit towards recovery.

Monday night sleeping was interupted by my frequent trips to the bathroom and by two cats hissing and fighting outside our door.

Somehow I managed to live here in Guaremala for 7 weeks last year without getting sick, but only lasted 5 days this time. I think I've eaten less carefully this time and had too much wine.

We walked the lakeshore trail this morning to the village of Santa Cruz where enjoyed a simple breakfast on the lakeshore deck of La Isla Verde. Last year I spent 3 days here, but in the former location up the cliffside. The new facility is down by the lake. From our table we look out over Lago de Atitlan at the three volanoes. Always be prepared and fortunately I was. Figured that I misplaced it after retrieving hidden wallet from money belt without replacing it safely away. Can't think of anything else of value in it besides a debit and credit card. Before leaving home I recorded contacts and card numbers which came in handy during this crisis. Cards now canceled.
